In 2009, the earlier named 'Pikeville Animal Shelter Committee,' held a contest for school-children to come up with the best name for an animal shelter. After a few weeks, the results were voted on at the monthly shelter meeting. It was a tie!
In the tie for a shelter name were, Jonathan Fann and Miranda Howser. They both came up with the winning name. The New Official Name for the animal shelter in Bledsoe County and Pikeville is: 'Paws And Claws Animal Shelter.'
Both Jonathan and Miranda were each given $25 and a gift certificate. 'Paws and Claws Animal Shelter became the new official name for the Advisory Council of 20+ people pushing for Pikeville to become pro-active in the management of stray dogs and cats in the area.
P.A.C.A.S Mission Statement
" The mission of Paws And Claws Animals Shelter ( P.A.C.A.S ) is to reduce dog and cat overpopulation in the Sequatchie Valley area; to advance and provide humane protective care and treatment of animals. A Vision for Animal Care in Bledsoe County
When we look down the road , P.A.C.A.S members have a vision to provide a shelter, veterinary care and an adoption agency for abandoned and stray animals. The definition of a shelter will be in the form of a physical location for Paws and Claws, foster homes, or outreach programs coordinated with agencies in nearby counties.
